Located in Macon County is a small city known as Oglethorpe. The city was incorporated on December 14, 1849. It is named in honor of James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. In the mid-1800s, smallpox and malaria caused much suffering among peoples living in the city. As a result, many individuals moved south to Americus, Georgia.
